How Long Do Vape Coils Last? Lifespan, Signs and 5 Ways to Extend It
Every refillable vaper eventually asks the same two questions: how long should this coil last, and why did this one die early? The honest answers — with the habits that double coil life.
The baseline: one to three weeks
A typical coil or pod lasts 7 to 21 days. Where you land in that range depends on four factors: how much you vape, how sweet your liquid is, what wattage you run, and whether the coil was primed properly on day one. Heavy use with sweet dessert liquid at high wattage sits at the one-week end; moderate use with a clean fruit or menthol 50/50 can stretch past three.
The signs a coil is finished
Flavour goes first — muddy, dull, then faintly toasty. Vapour thins. Eventually you get the unmistakable burnt hit. Don't push through it: a spent coil never recovers, and vaping on burnt cotton tastes exactly as bad as it sounds. Full diagnosis in our burnt-taste guide.
The five habits that extend coil life
1. Prime every new coil. Drip e-liquid onto the visible cotton ports, fill the tank, wait ten minutes before firing. Skipping this is the number-one coil killer — a dry-fired coil is scorched permanently in one puff.
2. Stay inside the wattage band. Coils print their range on the side (e.g. 10–14W). The sweet spot is the middle; the top of the range trades lifespan for warmth.
3. Watch your sweetener. Heavily sweetened dessert and candy liquids caramelise on coils — "coil gunk" — and can halve lifespan. If you love them, accept faster changes or rotate cleaner flavours between.
4. Don't chain vape. Give the wick 15–30 seconds to re-saturate between puffs, and don't vape a tank below quarter-full.
5. Keep liquid in it. A coil that dries out mid-day burns exactly like an unprimed one.
Coils we stock
Whatever you run, keep spares: Innokin Z coils for the Zlide/Zenith family, Vaporesso COREX pods for every XROS, and PnP X coils across the Voopoo Drag and Argus PRO lines — all in coils and tanks. Running out mid-week is how people end up back at the corner shop.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean and reuse a vape coil?
Rinsing can dislodge surface gunk but won't restore burnt cotton — at best it buys a few extra days on a lightly-used coil. Replacement is the real fix.
Why did my brand-new coil burn instantly?
It wasn't primed. Cotton must be saturated before the first fire — ten minutes of patience saves every coil.
Do nic salts burn coils faster than freebase liquid?
Strength doesn't matter; sweetener and thickness do. A clean 20mg salt is gentler on coils than a heavily-sweetened 3mg shortfill. 18+ only.
